Fra Clodovis Boff, after being one of the pioneers of Liberation Theology in Brazil and becoming disillusioned with the movement, turned into one of its most fearless and critical dissidents. He identified a fatal fundamental error in this trend (which was more Marxist than theological)—namely, the placement of the poor in the role of Christ.
